Celebrity guests Bill McGlaughlin (WFMT’s Exploring Music) and CSO violinist David Taylor, music from movies Indiana Jones and Finding Dory; and treasured favorites from holiday carols to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 highlight the upcoming Park Ridge Civic Orchestra concert season. The season will also include a Founders Memorial Concert honoring the late Edgar and Nancy Muenzer.
The Family Halloween Concert will be held October 26, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Pickwick Theatre in Park Ridge, IL. Themed “Bones, Mummies & Tomb Raiders,” the concert features music from Indiana Jones, a performance on the Pickwick’s venerable pipe organ, and dramatic favorites including: William Tell Overture (Rossini), Carnival of the Animals (Saint-Saens), Also Sprach Zarathustra (Strauss), Symphony No. 5 (Beethoven), Symphony No. 1 “Titan” (Mahler), and Phantom of the Opera (Webber).
The “Unforgettable” Holiday Concert will be held December 7, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pickwick. Along with traditional Christmas carols and popular holiday songs, this concert includes the song, “Unforgettable,” written in 1951 by Irving Gordon, Grammy-winning as sung by Nat King Cole, and featured in the current Disney blockbuster, Finding Dory. Other timeless favorites include Fountains of Rome (Respighi), songs of the 1940s, Roman Carnival Overture (Berlioz), and the Victory at Sea Suite (Rogers) honoring Pearl Harbor Day.
The Founders’ Memorial Concert will be held February 8, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pickwick. Honoring the late Edgar and Nancy Muenzer, who co-founded Park Ridge Civic Orchestra in 1994, the concert will feature Chicago Symphony Orchestra violinist David Taylor as guest soloist. Held the week before Valentine’s Day, this celebration of soulmates includes Out of Africa Suite (Barry), Romeo and Juliet Suite (Prokofiev), Romance (Dvorak), Sonata Movement and Der Rosenkavelier Suite (Strauss), Violine Double Concerto (Bach), and Doctor Zhivago Theme (popularly known as “Lara’s Theme”).
“David Taylor, Brahms & Tchaikovsky” will be held March 12, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, IL. Renowned violin soloist David Taylor, Chicago Symphony Orchestra assistant concertmaster, solos with the Park Ridge Civic Orchestra in the splendid Violin Concerto in D Major (Brahms) and Symphony No. 5 (Tchaikovsky).
“Exploring the Variant” with Bill McGlaughlin will be held April 2, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. Bill McGlaughlin, host of the popular Exploring Music show on WFMT Radio, guest-conducts the Park Ridge Civic Orchestra in a performance of Variations on a Theme by Haydn (Brahms); Variations on a Theme of Paganini (Rachmaninoff); and Enigma Variations (Elgar).
