Children's Corner Suite – DEBUSSY
Le Tambeau de Couperin – RAVEL
Siegfried Idyll – WAGNER
Pulcinella – STRAVINSKY
Children's Corner Suite originally written for piano, was dedicated to his only child, ChouChou, and was later orchestrated by Andre Caplet.
Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin is a collection of pieces written to honor François Couperin, revered as one of the founders of the French school of keyboard music.
Siegfried Idyll is another tribute to Romance this season. It is Wagner's intimate love letter to his wife Cosima celebrating her birthday and the birth of a son (named Siegfried). This piece was originally performed by a small ensemble on the stairs of their villa as Cosima awoke. How romantic is that?!
Stravinsky's ballet Pulcinella, a sunny and humourus evocation of the Neapolitan spirit, was turned into a concert suite by selecting eight movements from the original twenty.
These works are replete with beautiful melodies that you will know, and you'll be happy you came for this delightful afternoon of music.
PETER VAN DE GRAAFF, producer and host of WFMT's Through the Night, will narrate this orchestral program.
