Talking about Likht un Shotn, Composer Dan Golden writes: "We are having fun putting my piece together—I have tried to take into account the colorful musical personalities of the soloists and they and the orchestra are doing a great job with the material. The piece draws from the classical tradition of the "Concertante" or "Concerto Grosso" with a group of soloists and a large orchestra. The musical idiom is inspired by Klezmer music but is pretty eclectic in style.
Lots of toe-tapping festive music but also some more serious moments as the title implies."

Romeo & Juliet, Opus 64 – PROKOFIEV

What would you expect? It's Valentine's Day. Of course, more Romance! And TWO tributes to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet! We start with a suite from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story which is based on Romeo and Juliet, and is the electric musical that changed the world when it first hit Broadway in 1957.

Then, we feature the world premier of Likht un Shotn, a concerto composed by Chicago composer, Daniel Golden. This concerto for four soloists and orchestra is an original piece, rather than an arrangement of traditional tunes. However it evokes the soulful melodies and infectious dance rhythms of Eastern European Jewish music,as well as middle Eastern, Balkan and Roma (Gypsy) music.inspired by the soulful melodies and infectious dance rhythms of the "Klezmer" tradition – Eastern European Jewish folk music.

Then hear one of the most beautiful, rapturous pieces ever written, Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. We have created a custom suite from the full length ballet. We have chosen some well known music along with music rarely heard from the complete ballet. This is likely going to be the most complete performance of Romeo and Juliet you will be able to hear live anytime soon. So whether or not you have heard Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet before, you will hear this amazing music in a whole new way!
